The Texas Rangers have optioned reliever Tom Wilhelmsen to AAA Round Rock. To replace Wilhselmsen on the active roster, the Rangers have recalled pitcher Nick Martinez.
The move with Wilhelmsen is not a big surprise, given the disaster outing from yesterday, where he allowed 9 hits and 6 runs in one inning of work. Wilhelmsen had four appearances since being recalled from AAA earlier this month, and allowed runs in half of them, giving up 8 runs total in six innings of work. On the season, Wilhelmsen has a 10.55 ERA and a 7.90 FIP in 21.1 IP.
Martinez has made one appearance this year for the Rangers, facing 5 batters, retiring just one of them, walking two, hitting a batter and allowing a hit. He's spent most of the year in the Round Rock rotation, and has a 4.50 ERA in 64 IP, with 42 Ks against 11 walks. Martinez likely will be the long man for the next few days, with Cesar Ramos being unavailable after yesterday's spot start. If the Rangers opt to bring someone else up to start on Saturday, Martinez would presumably be optioned to make room for that pitcher.
