Michael Matuella, the Texas Rangers' 3rd round draft pick in the 2015 draft, will miss the rest of the 2016 season with a sprained ligament in his right elbow.
That's certainly a kick in the nuts. Matuella was seen as a potential #1 overall pick last season before his junior year at Duke University was cut short due to Tommy John surgery. He had a sparkling debut for Spokane earlier this week, throwing as hard as 98 mph, but apparently, that will be his only game action for 2016.
Matuella had worked hard to make it back, and the initial indications are that surgery isn't expected. Hopefully this is just a matter of additional time needed after TJS. Matuella has one of the highest ceilings in the Rangers' system, though he dropped in the draft because of injury issues, which also include back problems. At this point, we'll have to just cross our fingers and hope he can come back strong in 2017.
