Brawl video: Travis Demeritte, the High Desert second baseman who is currently leading the California League in home runs, with 19, went deep for the High Desert Mavericks in the fifth inning of their game last night. I'm not sure what happened -- if Rancho Cucamonga, who was playing at home, thought Demeritte disrespected them in their house, if they thought he was too comfortable at the plate, or if it was just a ball that got away...but in any case, Demeritte was plunked the next time he came up, leading off the sixth.
Demeritte took exception, started walking to the mound, and, well...there was chaos. Or a bench-clearing incident, anyway, that appeared to involve several scuffles, albeit nothing of the "Rougned Odor clocking Jose Bautista" variety that was saw last month with the Rangers. Still, it was pretty entertaining, as you can see below.
Demeritte, who started the season red-hot before cooling off in May, has gotten back in a groove, putting up a .288/.373/.712 slash line in his last 67 plate appearances. On the season, Demeritte is sporting a .260/.345/.579 slash line, though with an alarming 94 Ks in 293 plate appearances. The power is real, but so are the contact issues. Still, the 21 year old who was taken at #30 overall in 2013 was in need of a bounce-back season after 2015's lost year, and he appears to be putting himself back on the prospect map.
