The Texas Rangers have announced that Colby Lewis has been placed on the 15 day disabled list, and that A.J. Griffin has been activated from the disabled list, both moves that were expected to occur today (since Griffin is tonight's starting pitcher).
What wasn't expected was that the Rangers would name their starter for Monday -- righthanded pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez, who was slated to pitch tonight for Round Rock. Gonzalez will be scratched for tonight and called up Monday, with some other move made then to clear a 25 man roster spot.
Gonzalez, 24, was the team's first round draft pick in the 2013 draft, and spent a fair amount of time in the majors last year. He was expected to vie for a spot in the Opening Day rotation this spring, but struggled in Surprise, and has spent the year in Round Rock. Chi Chi has had an up-and-down campaign, with his inability to miss bats being a constant struggle, but he's shown improvement in that regard in his last five starts, registering at least 5 Ks in each of his last 5 games after recording that many only once in his previous nine starts, while walking just 7 batters in that stretch.
Overall, Gonzalez has a 5.04 ERA in 80.1 IP for Round Rock this season.
