2016 Texas Rangers draft preview: With the MLB draft coming next week, I'm going to highlight a few of the players who I anticipate will be on the Rangers' radar at #30. These aren't scouting reports or anything, but just capsule write-ups so you have some familiarity with guys who would appear to be in the mix for the Rangers to take with their first round pick.
Today we are talking about Kyle Muller, a lefthanded pitcher out of Jesuit Prep in Dallas. Muller is a big (6'5", 230 lb.), athletic guy described by ESPN as "an Adonis" who throws in the low-90s, though with secondaries that are less than impressive.
BA ranks him #39 on their top 100, and their latest mock draft has him going at #32 to the Dodgers. Keith Law has Muller #58 on his Big Board, but he also had him going at #15 to the Twins in his previous most recent mock draft, describing him as a "high ceiling" pitcher, before slotting him at #21 to the Jays in the mock draft he released today. MLB Pipeline, meanwhile, has Muller at #24 on their rankings. Muller has seen his stock go up this spring -- earlier on, he was seen as a second or third rounder -- but he also has racked up some alarming pitch counts of late. Evan Grant's story with angry quotes from Doug Brocail about coaches not taking proper care of amateur pitches mentions a 134 pitch game and a 123 pitch game in May for Muller.
