Texas Rangers trade rumors: Travis Demeritte, the second baseman for High Desert, the Texas Rangers' high-A affiliate, is a player identified in Jim Bowden's latest column as a Futures Game participant who could be dealt.
Bowden notes that the Rangers are reluctant to move the guys everyone asks about -- he mentions Jurickson Profar, Joey Gallo, Lewis Brinson and Dillon Tate -- but correctly notes that Demeritte doesn't really have a clear path to the majors in Texas. Not only are Profar and Rougned Odor in the majors, but Andy Ibanez is playing second base for Frisco, and is generally considered a superior prospect as well.
That being said, a team that's a seller this deadline that is looking for a potential second baseman of the future is going to want to talk to the Rangers. Demeritte, the #30 overall pick in 2013, has bounced back from a lost 2015 campaign to put up a .257/.340/.556 slash line for High Desert, although his 108 Ks in 326 plate appearances is alarming. Still, the power and ability to play second base and third base is going to be attractive for teams, and he's someone who Texas will likely be willing to part with as they look for deadline help.
