The Minnesota Twins have fired Terry Ryan as the team's general manager, per a release from the Minnesota Twins announcing he has been "relieved of his duties."
Although the Twins have been awful this year, this is still a surprising move, given Ryan's long history with the team and the fact that he was brought back as g.m. a few years ago. Ryan was g.m. of the Twins from 1994 until he stepped down at the end of the 2007 season, and then was brought back at the end of the 2011 season to resume his old post.
Rob Antony has been named the interim general manager in Ryan's place. It remains to be seen whether this move will result in the Twins being more aggressive in terms of trying to move veterans -- Ervin Santana being the most prominent name who could be dealt -- or if they'll just be treading water in the interim.
