Texas Rangers trade rumors: Vince Velasquez, Philadelphia Phillies righthanded starting pitcher, is of interest to the Texas Rangers, according to multiple reports, and CSN Philly says that discussion between the teams has gotten "pretty deep."
I wrote about the Velasquez rumors on Monday, and since then, things seem to have intensified, with multiple Rangers scout types at tonight's Philly game, and several writers indicating there is a lot of smoke there. Velasquez is a guy with a live arm who throws hard but who has durability issues that has some folks thinking he could end up in the bullpen, making him a fairly risky play, given that the likely price is Joey Gallo, or Jurickson Profar, or Nomar Mazara, or a package headed by Lewis Brinson.
On the other hand, if he stays healthy and productive, Velasquez is a great piece to have behind Yu Darvish and Cole Hamels, and he is controllable for five years beyond this one. It isn't out of the question that the Rangers could see Gallo, or a Brinson-led package, to be a palatable price to pay for a cheap, controllable starting pitcher with a bunch of upside.
So stay tuned...
