Jose Leclerc is being called up to the Texas Rangers today according to a tweet by Mark Parker that has been confirmed by Evan Grant. With the Texas Rangers bullpen having been worked heavily the past three days, there's a need for a fresh arm, and I would assume either Michael Roth or Nick Martinez -- both of whom threw a lot of pitches yesterday -- will be sent down.
Leclerc has split the season between Frisco and Round Rock, and after being used as a starter in Frisco in his first two outings, he's moved to the bullpen, and had much more success. Leclerc has, however, had issues finding the strike zone -- while he has 22 Ks in 21.1 IP in AAA, he's also walked 13 batters, and the sense has been that he still needs to refine his control before he's truly ready for the majors. However, with the Rangers needing a fresh arm, Leclerc can at least be a body available in the pen, before presumably being sent down no later than Monday, when the All Star Break starts.
Meanwhile, Yohander Mendez is, per Scott Lucas, getting a spot start for Round Rock tonight. Mendez hasn't pitched since June 22, apparently due to the AA All Star Break and using the opportunity to get him some additional rest, but the 21 year old lefthander will be getting the opportunity tonight to show his stuff against more advanced hitters. Mendez started the season at high-A High Desert before being promoted to AA Frisco, and has been solid at both stops, putting up a 2.59 ERA in 62.2 IP, with 73 Ks against 22 walks and just 3 home runs.
