The Texas Rangers have officially recalled righthanded pitcher Jose Leclerc from AAA Round Rock, per John Blake on Twitter. Word leaked earlier today that Leclerc was coming up, and we talked about that here, with TepidP also providing a report on Leclerc that you can read here. Leclerc gives the Rangers a fresh arm in the pen, something much needed after relievers had to pitch so many innings the previous three games.
To clear a spot on the 25 man roster, the Rangers designated pitcher Michael Roth for assignment. Roth was called up over the weekend to get the team a bullpen arm, and he was pressed into duty yesterday. Roth ended up throwing 82 pitches in relief against Boston, giving up 6 runs on 10 hits (including 3 home runs) over 3.2 IP. The Rangers have 10 days to waive, trade or release Roth, and I suspect they'll put him on waivers and, if he clears, ask him to go back to Round Rock and resume his swingman role there.
With Roth being DFA'd, the 40 man roster now stands at 39.
UPDATE -- Well, I thought the 40 man roster now stands at 39, but the beat guys are saying Roth will stay on the 40 man roster and has been DFA'd so he can clear mandatory optional waivers. That doesn't make sense to me -- Roth isn't out of options, so he could be optioned without having to clear waivers, but he would have to clear waivers if he's being put on outright waivers. If I get clarification, I will update again.
