The Texas Rangers have called up Jared Hoying from AAA Round Rock. To make space for Hoying on the 25 man roster, the Rangers have placed catcher Bryan Holaday on the disabled list.
This is kind of amusing...Holaday's on the d.l. with what is being described as a "bruised left thumb." I would say that I'd wager most catchers this time of year have bruised left thumbs, but beyond that, Holaday hasn't caught since June 26. He hasn't appeared in a game since them except on July 4, when he pinch ran. Maybe he slid into a base funny while pinch running and I missed it, I don't know.
Anyway, with Shin-Soo Choo apparently being unavailable because of his back issue, Hoying is up to give the Rangers a backup outfielder, and Holaday's presence has been superfluous since Robinson Chirinos came off the d.l., although Texas hasn't wanted to cut Holaday loose because he's out of options and would be claimed on waivers. So Holaday is stashed away for the time being, giving Texas a chance to punt the decision on what to do with him until rosters expand in September for the time being.
In addition, pitcher Michael Roth cleared optional waivers, and has been optioned to AAA Round Rock. He is still on the 40 man roster.
