Kyle Lohse starting tomorrow, Nick Martinez optioned

The Rangers have optioned pitcher Nick Martinez, and will call up Kyle Lohse to start against Minnesota tomorrow

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

In a surprising move, the Texas Rangers have opted to call up Kyle Lohse from AAA Round Rock to make the start against the Twins tomorrow, and are optioning Nick Martinez to AAA Round Rock, according to the beat guys.

Jeff Banister had previously stated unequivocally that Martinez would start on Saturday, but with Cole Hamels failing to go five innings -- marking the sixth straight game that a starter has failed to go five -- I suspect that the Rangers wanted someone who they felt gave them a better shot of eating innings than Martinez would.

In addition, I believe that Lohse had the option to become a free agent today, so Texas may have chosen to add him rather than lose him.

Lohse has a 5.06 ERA in 10 starts for Round Rock this season.
