Boston Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel will miss 3-6 weeks due to knee surgery

Mark L. Baer-USA TODAY Sports

Boston Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel is going to miss the next 3 to 6 weeks due to knee surgery, which he will undergo Monday, per reports on the Tweetbox.  Kimbrel is having to have the cartilage in his left knee repaired.

The Red Sox traded for Brad Ziegler from the Diamondbacks yesterday, so they do have some immediate fortification, but Junichi Tazawa is also dealing with shoulder issues, so Boston could still be in a position to look to add bullpen help -- an area where the Rangers are also potential buyers.

Boston is in third place in the A.L. East currently, two games out of first place, and despite a terrific offense that is first in the A.L. in batting average, OBP and slugging, they're having to battle for playoff positioning because of a pitching staff that is currently 10th in ERA.
