Drew Stubbs has been activated from the 60 day disabled list today. To make room for him on the 25 man roster, the Rangers have optioned Ryan Rua to AAA Round Rock. To make room for him on the 40 man roster, the Rangers have designated infielder Kyle Kubitza for assignment.
Stubbs had been on a rehab assignment with Round Rock, and that 20 day period had run, so the Rangers had to make a move to bring him back. Since he is out of options, he would have had to have cleared waivers to be sent to the minors. Avoiding that possibility, the Rangers instead are choosing to send down Ryan Rua, who got off to a great start to the season, but who has slumped of late. Rua had primarily been playing in the outfield or at first base against lefthanded pitchers, but Jurickson Profar will likely be at first base against lefties, and the Rangers can use Delino DeShields in the outfield.
Stubbs will likely be a defensive replacement and pinch runner for the rest of the season, while Rua will likey return once rosters expand in September. In the meantime, he will have the opportunity to get regular playing time the next three weeks while working on getting back into a good groove.
Kubitza, 26, was purchased from the Angels in late June. The Rangers will likely put him on waivers and try to outright him.
