Carlos Gomez activated, Drew Stubbs DFA'd

The Rangers have purchased the contract of Carlos Gomez, and have designated Drew Stubbs for assignment

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Carlos Gomez is a Texas Ranger, with the team having officially purchased his contract today from AAA Round Rock.  To make room for Gomez on the 25 man roster and the 40 man roster, the Rangers have designated Drew Stubbs for assignment.

This ultimately works out as a straight outfielder for outfielder swap.  Stubbs was on the team at the end of the 2015 season, came to training camp with the Rangers, didn't make the team, spent time with the Braves, and then ended up getting released by them and re-signing with Texas mid-season.  He landed on the disabled list with a sprained toe that sidelined him for two months before being reactivated recently.  Stubbs was a defense and pinch running option off the bench, and presumably the Rangers feel they have that covered with other available options.

Gomez, meanwhile, is officially back in the major leagues with the Rangers.  Texas will take a look at him as a corner outfield option over the final month-plus, as they continue to look for a viable replacement for Shin-Soo Choo, who is on the d.l. with a broken arm.
