Victor Payano promoted to AAA Round Rock

Lefthanded pitcher Victor Payano has been promoted from AA Frisco to AAA Round Rock

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Rangers have promoted 23 year old left handed pitcher Victor Payano from AA Frisco to AAA Round Rock.  Payano has a 4.05 ERA in 100 IP for the Roughriders, with 96 Ks, 44 walks and 12 home runs allowed.

Payano has stuff that many observers think can play in the majors, but his consistency and command isn't great, and there are questions about how he responds to adversity.  This promotion is particularly noteworthy since Payano will be a free agent at season's end if he isn't on the 40 man roster.  His being placed on the 40 man seems to be a long shot, but it may be the Rangers want to see him against more advanced hitters before making a decision, or to help them decide whether to offer him a more lucrative minor league deal to re-sign than they might otherwise.

Or it could be that the Rangers simply need arms in Round Rock.

In any case, I will be interested in seeing how he fares, and if he is in the bullpen or the rotation.
