The Oakland A’s have released DH Billy Butler, cutting ties with one of the more disappointing signings the team has made in recent years.
Butler, 30, was signed to a 3 year, $30 million deal by the A’s after a disappointing 2014 campaign with the Royals. That deal was widely seen at the time as an overpay, and Butler has posted a negative WAR for the A’s over the past two seasons.
The A’s will absorb what appears to be roughly $11 million owed to Butler for the 2017 season. After a clubhouse altercation between Butler and Danny Valencia left Butler sidelined with an injury, and which prompted reports of Butler being a less than terrific teammate, it was anticipated that Butler might not be back next year. With Oakland out of the race, there’s no reason for Oakland not to cut ties with him now.
