Michael Roth clears waivers, accepts outright assignment

The Texas Rangers announced yesterday that LHP Michael Roth cleared waivers and has accepted an outright assignment to Round Rock

Michael Roth, a lefthanded pitcher who the Texas Rangers designated for assignment on September 11, has cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to AAA Round Rock, per John Blake.

I’m not quite clear on the rules for Roth, who was a free agent after both the 2014 and the 2015 seasons despite not having the six years usually necessary for a player to be a minor league free agent. I believe that is due to technicalities regarding when Roth was added to the 40 man roster and when he was dropped from the 40 man roster by the Angels, similar to the situation that resulted in the Rangers being unable to outright Ben Rowen.

In any case, I believe Roth accepting the outright assignment simply means he stays in the Rangers organization until after the World Series, and theoretically is able to be added to the playoff roster at some point. I do not believe that this impacts his ability to become a free agent after the season.
