Texas Rangers prospects Leody Taveras and Yohander Mendez have made MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospect list, which is being rolled out tonight on MLB Network and on Twitter.
Teenage outfielder Taveras is #55 on the list, while lefthanded pitcher Mendez is right behind him, at #56. Interestingly, both are ahead of recently traded former Rangers prospects Jorge Alfaro (#72) and Luis Ortiz (#62). On the other hand, center fielder Lewis Brinson, shipped to Milwaukee in the Jonathan Lucroy deal, is at #18 on the list.
The Rangers’ farm system has thinned out compared to recent seasons due to trades and promotions, though Taveras, Mendez, and righthander Ariel Jurado are generally seen as the top three in the system. Mendez made his major league debut last season, and Jurado could in 2017...Taveras, on the other hand, is still a ways away, although his ceiling is viewed as the highest of any player in the system.
