Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel has been suspended for five games for his behavior in last night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, MLB has announced. That suspension will begin at the beginning of the 2018 season.
Gurriel was caught on cameras yesterday making “slant eyes” in the dugout after homering off of Dodgers pitcher Yu Darvish, while mouthing “chinito”, which is Spanish slang for “Chinese boy.” MLB has recently issued suspensions to other players for using slurs on the field.
This seems destined to make no one happy, however, since those who believe a suspension was warranted will say MLB is copping out by not suspending Gurriel for a World Series game, choosing instead to start the suspension next year, while those who don’t think it is warranted will criticize it for being too harsh.
In any case, Gurriel is in the lineup tonight for Houston, batting fifth.
