The Texas Rangers placed four prospects in the Baseball America Northwest League top 20 prospect list, with 2016 first rounder Cole Ragans coming in at #1 overall. Ragans earned praise for the spin on his low-90s fastball and his solid changeup, with BA saying he has #2 starter potential if his curveball comes along.

Also making the list were pitcher Alex Speas, at #12, outfielder Miguel Aparicio, at #13, and catcher Matt Whatley, at #15. Speas and Aparicio have been on the radar, but the inclusion of Whatley on the list is a bit of a surprise. BA says Whatley has above-average defensive skills, though, and he had a nice debut with the bat, as well, slashing .289/.371/.450. Whatley was a 2017 third round pick out of Oral Roberts, which is also where Jose Trevino, the Rangers’ top catching prospect, also went to school.

Its a nice showing for the Rangers, who haven’t had a lot of players show up in the BA league rankings prior to this. Spokane had an intriguing group of players, and Ragans and Speas, in particular, have the potential to be special pitchers down the road.
