Brad Holman, the Texas Rangers’ bullpen coach for 2016-17, will not return in that role for 2018, the Rangers announced today. Hector Ortiz, a former major league catcher (that picture is of him with Texas in 2002) who was the team’s first base coach this season, has been named the team’s bullpen coach.

Holman had been with the organization for about a decade, and had worked his way up from the minor leaguers, where he had developed a strong reputation for his work with the minor league pitchers. The major league bullpen was a problem early in 2016 and pretty much all of 2017, however, and it appears that Holman is taking the fall for that.

The Rangers also announced they have exercised manager Jeff Banister’s 2019 option. No other word on the other members of the coaching staff -- at this point, given that they announced Holman won’t be back, my assumption is that everyone else likely will return, but that’s obviously just an assumption.

UPDATE — All other coaches are being retained, per the beat guys on Twitter.
