MLB Trade Rumors: Matt Harvey for Jurickson Profar has been discussed by the New York Mets and Texas Rangers, according to Jon Heyman on Twitter. Such a trade would be a swap of two one-time phenoms who have seen their careers derailed by injuries, and who have left folks questioning whether they will either get back to where they were before the injuries. And to make it even juicier, both Profar and Harvey are represented by Scott Boras.
Alas, Heyman says that its unlikely to come about, as the Rangers want more than just Harvey, who is a free agent after 2018, for Profar. The Mets, meanwhile, would not give up their one-time ace for just Profar, according to reports. That would seem to make a deal unfeasible.
The 28 year old Harvey was great in 2012 and 2013, missed 2014 due to Tommy John surgery, was great in 2015, and has been awful the past two seasons while dealing with injuries. Profar, 24, got a taste of the majors in 2012 and 2013, and was supposed to take over at second base in 2014 after the trade of Ian Kinsler to Detroit. Instead, Profar missed two seasons with a shoulder problem, and has spent the bulk of the 2016 and 2017 seasons in AAA.
It makes sense that the Rangers would have interest in Harvey, a buy-low candidate who the Rangers would presumably hope could recapture some of his past magic. And it makes sense that the Mets would have interest in Profar, a former top prospect who still has three years of team control and could slot in immediately in a middle infield spot. That said, a swap of the two players appears to be unlikely.
