The St. Louis Cardinals have traded for outfielder Marcell Ozuna from the Miami Marlins, according to multiple reports on Twitter. Ozuna, a 27 year old righthanded outfielder who can handle center field or a corner outfield spot, had been talked about as a potential Texas Rangers target, although with only two years of team control remaining and with a hefty prospect price tag, Texas didn’t seem to be a good match.
Ozuna had a breakout 2017 campaign, slashing .312/.376/.548 in 679 plate appearances after having brought a career 741 OPS into the season. The Marlins asking price for him was said to be significant, though less than the asking price on fellow outfielder Christian Yelich, who has five years of team control remaining.
No word yet who the Cardinals are giving up, but we will update when that information comes available.
UPDATE — Per Clark Spencer, the Marlins are getting Sandy Alcantara, Magneuris Sierra, Zac Gallen and Daniel Castano.
