The Philadelphia Phillies and free agent first baseman Carlos Santana have agreed to a three year, $60 million deal, according to Jon Heyman on Twitter. Santana had been with the Cleveland Indians, and had been offered a qualifying offer, so he will cost the Phillies a draft pick.
The Texas Rangers had been rumored to be in the mix for Santana, who was expected to land something like three years, $45-48 million, and I can't imagine the Rangers had interest in Santana at that higher value. The Phillies have not been good lately, but with this move, they are apparently being more aggressive about competing this year.
