Alex Reyes, St. Louis Cardinals righthanded pitching prospect, likely needs Tommy John surgery based on the results of the MRI on his elbow, according to Ken Rosenthal. Reyes, 22, will be seeking a second opinion, but these things almost always result in surgery being inevitable.

This is a huge blow for the Cardinals — Reyes spent some time in the majors in 2016, and was ranked #4 on the Baseball America top 100 list that was just unveiled. Reyes was #1 on the BP top 101 list, and #10 on Keith Law’s list. He appeared likely to be in the Cardinals rotation at some point in 2017.

Assuming Reyes does undergo Tommy John surgery in the near future, he would miss all of 2017, and most likely the early part of 2018.
