Mike Napoli’s contract with the Texas Rangers is for one year, $6 million, with a 2018 club option for $11.5 million that includes a $2.5 million buyout, according to Ken Rosenthal. Effectively, that means it is either a 1 year, $8.5 million deal or a 2 year, $17 million deal, depending on whether the Rangers pick up the option.

That is a surprisingly reasonable deal, all things considered...if Napoli is serviceable in 2017, then $8.5 million for 2018 would seem to be a pretty reasonable option to pick up, and if Napoli does end up falling off the cliff, well, you’re just out $8.5 million for one year.

The Rangers have essentially gotten themselves the potential upside of a two year deal for the obligation of a one year deal for a guy considered to be a great presence in the clubhouse, and who gives them a platoon bat at 1B or DH who you think could be pressed into full-time duty without killing you, if need be. I like this deal.
