Josh Hamilton is returning to Houston to have his left knee examined, and he is expected to have arthroscopic surgery on the knee on Monday, per the beat guys.

This is another setback for the Texas Rangers outfielder/first baseman/DH, who is in camp on a minor league deal as he tries to make his way back from a knee injury that kept him from playing in the majors in 2016.

Hamilton is trying to make the Rangers’ team as a bench bat who can spell Mike Napoli at first base and also play some DH, but at this point, it would seem extremely unlikely Hamilton will make the Opening Day roster.

The question now is whether Hamilton will get a chance to play in the minors at some point in the early part of the season, and show that he can hold up, or if he’s simply not able to physically handle the demands of playing baseball anymore.
