Mike Napoli and the Texas Rangers have a deal for Napoli to return to Texas in 2017, and reports indicate the deal is a 1 year, $8.5 million deal with a club option for 2018.

That’s about where I figured Napoli would end up, somewhere in the $7-9 million range. The club option for 2018 is interesting, as it gives the Rangers the potential benefits of a two year deal without the potential downside, and Napoli had supposedly been pushing for a multi-year deal. I’m curious if the 2018 club option was the hangup that caused the delay.

Adding Napoli puts the Rangers’ guaranteed deals at $159 million for 2017, and when you add in your various minimum salary guys or guys on minor league deals who might stick, it means payroll for the 2017 season should be in the neighborhood of $165 million.
