Alex Bregman got mad online at Rougned Odor

Rougned Odor went the other way in the 9th inning last night for Venezuela to drive in the go-ahead run for Venezuela in their elimination game against Italy in the WBC, paving the way for them to advance to the second round.

In the process of doing so, he bat-flipped, apparently thinking he had homered — in reality, it went off the wall, and was a long single, rather than a double, due to Odor prematurely going into trot mode.

That made Houston Astro, and Team USA, infielder Alex Bregman get mad online, as he tweeted a “act like you’ve done it before” bit last night before deleting it. The Big Lead author of the piece linked piously backs Bregman, talking about his respect for the “unwritten rules” and bitching about Odor’s “bat-flip and lack of hustle”.

First of all, its kind of funny for a guy with 217 major league plate appearances to be carping about a guy with over 1500 major league plate appearances with an “act like you’ve done it before” bit.

Secondly, it is even funnier when you consider that Odor has been part of two division-winning teams, both of which teams beat out Bregman’s own Astros to win those division titles.

Third, it was a huge hit in a big international tournament that gave Venezuela, which entered the ninth inning trailing, the lead, and the opportunity to advance. Its exactly the sort of situation where you bat flip.

Should Odor have run hard out of the box? Sure, although I also thought it was gone.

Should Bregman be subtweeting Odor over it? No. 22 year olds who were in college two years ago probably don’t need to be lecturing someone who has been in pro ball almost 6 years now about how the game is supposed to be played.
