Video: Ronald Guzman home run. Texas Rangers first baseman Ronald Guzman was signed to a $3.5 million bonus as part of the 2011 J-2 class that included Nomar Mazara and Yohander Mendez, but the past couple of years he has been largely overlooked as he has struggled to consistently hit.
Guzman was promoted to AA for 2016 despite an underwhelming track record in A ball, and Guzman had a nice season, putting up a .288/.348/.477 slash line and earning a late season promotion to AAA Round Rock. He was added to the 40 man roster this offseason, and one of the common things you heard from folks in Surprise this spring were remarks on how Guzman had filled out. Listed at 6’5”, 205 lbs. officially, Guzman is reported to be around 250 lbs. now, which would seem to bode well for his future power potential.
Guzman is off to a terrific start in AAA this year, putting up a .391/.440/.565 slash line so far in 2017, with just 7 Ks in 50 plate appearances. Last night, Guzman hit his second home run of 2017, which you can see below:
