Texas Rangers pitcher Tanner Scheppers cleared waivers last week and was outrighted to AAA Round Rock, although Scheppers, due to his service time, had the right to decline the outright assignment and become a free agent.
Apparently, Scheppers opted not to become a free agent, as the Round Rock Express Twitter feed says he has been added to the Express roster. Scheppers will presumably work out of the bullpen for the Express.
The 30 year old Scheppers is no longer on the 40 man roster, but will remain in the Rangers’ organization, and the team can bring him back to the majors later this season, should they wish, by purchasing his contract and putting him back on the 40 man roster. The indications at this point, however, suggest that Scheppers isn’t in the team’s plans.
