The Texas Rangers have recalled Nick Martinez from AAA Round Rock, per John Blake on Twitter. Martinez is replacing A.J. Griffin, who was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to April 18, earlier today with gout in his toe. Martinez will start for the Rangers on Saturday in place of Griffin.
Martinez, 26, was called up earlier this season when the Rangers needed an extra arm in the bullpen, then was optioned without appearing in a game when Andrew Cashner was activated from the disabled list. It remains to be seen whether this is a one-start shot — Griffin is eligible to come off of the 10 day disabled list on April 28, which is the next time that spot in the rotation will come up, so Martinez could pitch Saturday, and then be sent back down for a bench player or extra bullpen arm, if the Rangers think Griffin will be ready to be activated after the minimum time.
Martinez has a career 4.44 ERA in 304 IP in the majors since 2014.
