23-20 - Rangers play good team, win anyway as streak reaches ten

Despite playing a good team, the Rangers still found a way to win tonight's baseball game

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

As a Texas Rangers fan, until recent years, I had not seen many outrageous winning streaks from my favorite team. Even so, there has always been that desire to see that L10: 10-0 in the standings column.

The Rangers reached that lofty goal in 2010 with an 11 game streak and again in 2011 with a 12 game run. Tonight, with their tenth straight win, the Rangers are L10: 10-0 for just the fourth time in team history. Neat!

The longest winning streak in club history came in the first year I followed the team back in 1991. From Sunday, May 12 to Monday, May 27 that year, the Rangers did not lose for 14 straight games. A couple of weeks later, Pudge Rodriguez would make his MLB debut.

I love streaking!

Player of the Game: Just about the only bummer of the streak has been a bit of a hitting slump for Joey Gallo. He hit the walk-off homer in the third win of this streak but he's been having a rough getting balls to find holes in recent weeks despite continuing to reach via the walk.

That's why it was awesome to see him obliterate one 440 ft off left-hander Daniel Norris in tonight's game to turn a tight 3-1 game into a more comfortable 5-1 lead. Texas would, of course, go on to win 5-3.

Up Next: The Rangers look to tie their 2010 winning streak of 11 straight against Justin Verlander and the Tigers. The Rangers will counter with A.J. Griffin who was on the mound when the winning streak began back in San Diego. First pitch from Comerica is scheduled for 6:15 pm CT.
