The streak began nearly two weeks ago with A.J. Griffin tossing a complete game shutout against the Padres in San Diego. Tonight, with Griffin on the mound, the winning streak came to an end at ten straight. Long live the streak!
I guess you really can't win 'em all.
Unfortunately for Texas, this one got out of hand pretty early as the Tigers hit back-to-back-to-back home runs with one out in the bottom of the first inning. Before he exited, Griffin had allowed a career high four home runs and all nine runs.
Texas has won a lot of games in a lot of ways over the last ten days but when the starting pitching gets thumped, that's a recipe for a loss.
Player of the Game: Austin Bibens-Dirkx gave the depleted bullpen a bit of a respite as he pitched the final 4 2/3 innings after Griffin exited without allowing a run. That was some Grade A mop up long relief from the 32-year-old rookie.
Up Next: The Rangers will look to get a new streak started with Yu Darvish on the mound in the rubber match of this series in Detroit. The Tigers will counter with LHP Matt Boyd. First pitch of the finale from Comerica Field is scheduled for 7:05 pm CT.
