Drew Robinson up, Dario Alvarez to the d.l.

The Rangers have recalled outfielder Drew Robinson, and placed reliever Dario Alvarez on the disabled list

Texas Rangers minor league infielder/outfielder Drew Robinson is on his way to Toronto, per the beat guys on Twitter, though apparently no decision has been made as to whether he will be activated for today’s game. Evan Grant tweeted that Delino DeShields is dealing with a sore back and between that and Jared Hoying doing a face plant into the wall yesterday, the Rangers could use some outfield depth.

The problem, of course, with a three man bench is that if someone is banged up it leaves you perilously short on available options. That said, there’s not a clear solution in regards to clearing a roster spot for Robinson, should he be activated today. The Rangers could put DeShields on the 10 day d.l., activating Robinson, and then optioning Robinson once Adrian Beltre is activated tomorrow, though that assumes they’re willing to d.l. DeShields.

Alternatively, the Rangers could option Dillon Gee, who was apparently officially recalled to replace A.J. Griffin, though that would mean not having Gee start on Wednesday, as planned.

Or Robinson could end up not being activated at all, in which case he simply got a trip to Toronto for naught.

UPDATE — The Rangers have officially recalled Robinson, and to make room for him on the 25 man roster, they have placed lefthanded reliever Dario Alvarez on the 10 day disabled list with a left elbow strain.

Robinson will, as noted above, presumably be optioned on Monday, when Beltre returns. In the meantime, the team is down to one lefty in the bullpen — Alex Claudio.
