The Texas Rangers have placed lefthanded pitcher Cole Hamels on the 10 day disabled list with a strained oblique, the team announced today, and is expected to be sidelined for at least 8 weeks.
That is...unfortunate. At some point, I guess I will expound on my thoughts on Hamels being on the shelf until July. I’m not feeling up to it right now, though.
To take Hamels’ spot on the 25 man roster, the Rangers have recalled Anthony Bass. Bass will presumably be the team’s long man.
Nick Martinez is starting tonight, and the expectation had been that Martinez would be sent back to AAA after tonight’s game so that A.J. Griffin could be activated and start tomorrow. With Hamels out for two months, however, one has to assume Martinez will be staying in the rotation. Thus, Bass could be going down to make room for Griffin tomorrow.
We shall see.
