Jonathan Mayo’s latest mock draft is out, and Mayo has the Rangers going with high-ceiling high school players with their two first round picks.
At #26, Mayo has Mobile, Alabama outfielder Bubba Thompson going to the Rangers. I wrote about Thompson earlier this week, and he’s the type of toolsy, athletic player the Rangers have targeted in the past.
Meanwhile, at #29, Mayo has the Rangers taking Miami Gardens, Florida shortstop Jeter Downs. Downs is ranked #68 on the Baseball America top 200 prospect list, and Minor League Ball did a write-up on him last week. He’s a true shortstop with questions about how much he will hit.
Mayo has Minnesota high school pitcher Sam Carlson, who has been mocked to the Rangers in several of these exercises, going at #30. My gut instinct is that the Rangers would go Carlson over Downs, unless there were signability issues with Carlson.
