MLB Trade Rumors: The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers want Yu Darvish, but a third “mystery team” is also after him, according to T.R. Sullivan. Sullivan says the team joining the Yankees and Dodgers in pursuit of Darvish is a team “nobody was expecting.”
The Yankees are reportedly on the verge of acquiring Jamie Garcia from the Minnesota Twins, and have also been hot and heavy after Sonny Gray, so I’m not sure how much of a priority Yu Darvish is for them. The Dodgers have seemed like the obvious match for Darvish, with the question being whether the Rangers will insist on either Walker Buehler or Alex Verdugo from L.A. to get a deal done, and whether the Dodgers will blink on parting with one of that pair.
Jeff Wilson says the Cubs aren’t really heavily in on Darvish, who can veto a trade there anyway. My guess for the “Mystery Team” is either Cleveland, who has seen its rotation struggle behind Corey Kluber and Carlos Carrasco, or Milwaukee, who is battling the Cubs in the N.L. Central.
UPDATE — Evan Grant thinks the Cleveland Indians are the mystery team. That would make some sense...after coming so close to breaking a 60+ year title drought last year, Cleveland would seem to be in a position to try to get that extra piece to combine with Kluber and Carrasco to get them over the top.
