New York Yankees rumors: The New York Yankees have acquired pitcher Sonny Gray from the Oakland A’s, along with $1.5 million in international bonus slot money, in exchange for outfielder Dustin Fowler, pitcher James Kaprelian, and SS/CF Jorge Mateo.
In Gray, the Yankees get the solid #2 starter they’ve been looking to add to the top of their rotation, who is also under team control through 2019. The A’s had been reportedly shopping Gray, and the Yankees were seen as the primary suitors, though the Los Angeles Dodgers were also in the mix.
Fowler, 22, is putting up an 871 OPS in AAA for the Yankees this season. He was #89 on the BA mid-season top 100 prospect list, and is the headliner for the A’s in this deal. Kaprielian, 23, was the Yankees first round pick in the 2015 draft out of UCLA, and is recovering from Tommy John surgery. Mateo is in AA.
With Gray off the board, one would assume that the Rangers and Dodgers will be re-engaging on Yu Darvish. We shall see if a deal gets done...
UPDATE -- I was reminded that Fowler ruptured his patella tendon in his knee in his first major league game, and is out for the season.
