Martinez down, Robinson up, Yu out of the All Star Game

The Rangers added Drew Robinson for bench depth, and Yu won't be pitching on Tuesday

The Texas Rangers optioned pitcher Nick Martinez to AAA Round Rock yesterday. Filling the empty spot on the 25 man roster is Drew Robinson, who was called up today.

With Joey Gallo dealing with a balky hamstring that is expected to limit him through this weekend, bringing Robinson up gives the Rangers an versatile extra player on the bench — Robinson can play, in a pinch, any position except catcher (though he would only be a shortstop in a true emergency), which gives the Rangers more leeway.

With Elvis Andrus returning from the paternity list tomorrow, either Robinson or Jurickson Profar will likely be sent back down.

In addition, Yu Darvish, the Rangers’ lone All Star, will not be playing in Tuesday’s All Star Game. Since he is pitching Sunday, under MLB rules, he's allowed to be made inactive and replaced on the active A.L. roster. He will participate in the festivities but will not be in the game.
