Former Texas Rangers general manager Joe Klein has passed away, per reports. Klein passed away in the early morning hours today, one day after he had turned 75.
Klein was in the Washington Senators minor league system from 1962-68 before turning to coaching. He coached and managed in the farm system for the Senators, and then Texas Rangers when the Senators moved to Texas in 1972. He was the farm director for the Rangers from 1978-82 before being promoted to general manager after the 1982 season.
As you may recall if you are a Ranger fan of a certain age, that was a bleak time for the Rangers organization, and Klein’s tenure as g.m. was short, being fired in 1984, with Tom Grieve replacing him as general manager.
After a stint with the Royals, Klein took over as general manager for the Cleveland Indians in 1986, and was the g.m. there for two years. Klein went back to the Royals organization, then was g.m. for the Tigers from 1993-95.
