The Texas Rangers have received Pedro Gonzalez from the Colorado Rockies as the player to be named later in the Jonathan Lucroy trade, the team has announced. Gonzalez, a 19 year old outfielder, is being assigned to Spokane in the Northwest League.

I have to say, I’m pleasantly surprised by this news. I’d kind of forgotten that the Rangers were even getting a player to be named later from Colorado, and figured that whatever Texas got back would be a fringe prospect, given how disappointing Lucroy was this year.

However, Gonzalez is, as Keith Law notes, an actual prospect. The 19 year old was signed by the Rockies out of the D.R. in 2014 for $1.3 million. Gonzalez has been playing center field this year, though at 6’5” and with a frame that figures to fill out, many folks think he will end up in right field long term.

I will write up Gonzalez in a little more detail tomorrow, but this is a surprisingly solid return for the Rangers, under the circumstances.
