This one was setting up to be a real kick in the pants as the Rangers blew leads of 3-0 and 4-3. It didn’t help that they failed to score with a bases loaded one out situation to pad that 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth before the Angels tied the game in the bottom of the frame.
This was nearly made worse when the Rangers didn’t score the go-ahead run in the ninth even though Shin-Soo Choo had the rare hit with a runner in scoring position. Worse still, it was nearly a Mike “5 Tools” Trout assist on the out at the plate that could have been the difference maker.
Instead, the Rangers got a steady outing from Andrew Cashner, a real trust building inning of relief through the Troutian part of the lineup from Ricky Rodriguez, two more scoreless frames from Alex Claudio, and the usual nailbiter of a final inning after Tony Barnette came in to clean up a Jose Leclerc mess in the bottom of the tenth.
Wow, would you look at that, the Rangers can advance above .500 with a win tomorrow.
Player(s) of the Game: Adrian Beltre went 3-for-5 with two home runs because he’s trying his damnedest to carry this corpse to the October finish line. Robinson Chirinos went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
Up Next: The Rangers close out this series with the Angels looking for a nice three games to one series win with Martin Perez on the mound against Eric Scribner’s brother Troy. First pitch is set for basically the middle of the night once again.
