The Texas Rangers recalled infielder Tyler Smith prior to today's game with the New York Mets. To make room for Smith on the 25 man roster, the Rangers optioned pitcher Nick Martinez to AAA Round Rock.
I'm not entirely sure what this is about. The Rangers have an extra bench player for today's game with the Mets, which I guess could be useful for pinch hitting for the pitcher purposes. But Smith seems unlikely to be up for more than a day or two, barring some other move involving the infielders.
My completely random guess is that Tyson Ross will be activated from the disabled list at some point in the relatively near future, and Martinez was going to be sent down then, and so they decided to get an extra body up in the meantime. But it's an odd move.
