The Texas Rangers have placed third baseman Adrian Beltre on the 10 day disabled list, the team has announced today, and have recalled pitcher Nick Gardewine.
This is purely a procedural move. Since rosters expand on September 1, Beltre being on the active roster doesn’t impact the ability of the Rangers to add players to the active roster. However, Gardewine was optioned to the minors less than 10 days ago, and thus could not normally be called up today.
There’s a loophole, however -- if you place a player on the active roster on the disabled list, you can recall a player who has been on optional assignment for less than 10 days. The Rangers wanted to get Gardewine up so that they could get a fresh arm in the pen after the innings logged the last few days. In order to do that, they had to put a player on the disabled list.
