MLB.com has released the MLB Pipeline top 100 prospect list, and two Texas Rangers prospects have made the cut. Center fielder Leody Taveras is the top ranked player on the list, coming in at #34, while left fielder/DH Willie Calhoun is at #53.
Taveras and Calhoun are the consensus top prospects in the Rangers’ system, and the only two prospects who have appeared on the major top 100 lists. I had thought that Cole Ragans or Hans Crouse might have a shot of cracking the back end of one of the top 100 lists, but neither has so far.
Taveras, who spent the 2017 season at Hickory, will likely start the 2018 campaign as the Down East Wood Ducks’ center fielder. Calhoun, acquired from the Dodgers in the Yu Darvish trade, ended the 2017 season in the majors, and is considered to have a good shot of starting the 2018 season in the Rangers’ major league starting lineup.
Former Ranger first rounder Lewis Brinson, traded this week to the Miami Marlins, is #27 on the list.
