Very surprising and sad news from the baseball world today, as Kevin Towers has passed away due to cancer. He was 56.
Towers became general manager of the San Diego Padres in 1995 at the age of 33, one of the youngest g.m.s ever to be hired. He was at the helm of the Padres until October, 2009, when San Diego let him go. After a season as a scout for the New York Yankees, Towers then took over as the general manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2010, a position he held until 2014, when Tony LaRussa, who had been brought in to oversee baseball operations for Arizona, let him go in September of that year.
