David Bell named new Cincinnati Reds manager

David Bell, who interviewed with the Rangers, appears likely to be hired to manage the Cincinnati Reds

The Cincinnati Reds appear to be close to hiring David Bell as their new manager. This wouldn’t be all that meaningful for Rangers fans, except that Bell is one of eight individuals who the Texas Rangers have interviewed for their vacant managerial job.

Bell and Joe Girardi, who was also interviewed by the Rangers, were reportedly the leading candidates for the Reds job, though Girardi withdrew from consideration, and, as noted in this morning’s links, is thought to also be out of the running with the Rangers. Assuming that is the case, that leaves six individuals who the Rangers have interviewed who are left — Don Wakamatsu, Jayce Tingler, Joe Espada, Brandon Hyde, Rocco Baldelli, and Dusty Wathan. Tingler is reportedly going to be on the major league coaching staff if he isn’t named the manager.

The Rangers could still interview other candidates, and it is possible Girardi is still an option for the Rangers. However, it appears likely that the finalists will come from the above list of six. I said on Twitter my wild ass guess as to who the finalists would be is Wakamatsu, Baldelli and Wathan, but that’s completely a guess on my part.

UPDATE — Bell has officially been named the new manager for the Reds.
