Luis Valbuena, a long-time major leaguer who spent the 2018 season with the Anaheim Angels, and Jose Castillo, who spent the 2004-08 seasons in the majors, were killed last night in a car accident in Venezuela. The pair were riding in a vehicle in Venezuela which struck a rock in the road, throwing them from the vehicle. Carlos Rivero, another former major leaguer, was also traveling in the vehicle, but survived the accident.
Valbuena, 33, spent parts of 11 seasons in the majors as an infielder, playing for the Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, and Los Angeles Angels. Castillo, 37, spent time in the majors from 2004-08 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the San Francisco Giants, and the Houston Astros, after which he played in the Mexican League, the Japanese League, and, each offseason, in the Venezuelan Winter League.
